Italoboyz - Zinga
Label / Get Physical Music
Cat # / GPM 084
Released / January 2008
Style / Techno, Minimal
Rating / 4

Now it's for real. After the enormous success of 'Viktor Casanova', it seems the Italoboyz are ready for the big league. Get Physical snapped them up for this, their sixth single, and like its predecessor, it's a stormer.

"Classic violin played by Filippo Rollando" reads the label and is it ever. 'Zinga' is defined by the sawing, screeching and stridency of Rollando, who both anchors and annihilates the track. Rollando's three-note lick wraps itself around the ‘Boyz unadorned kick/cymbal percussion and tick-tock bassline to create a simple groove, which is later adorned with long, meandering violin lines, half-finished blurps that become an integral part of the final product. You can imagine Rollando in the studio telling the Italoboyz, "No, no, no, I can play that better. Let me try again,” and the ‘Boyz lying to him, claiming they'd run out of storage space on their hard drive. Like 'Viktor Casnova', 'Zinga' is ridiculous and brilliant at the same time.

On the flip, the DRAMAdub is indeed more dramatic. Strings pile up on top of another, unsure where one line ends and where another begins, transforming massed melodies into echoed rhythms. You don't lose your mind listening to this one; it's already gone.

The third track, ‘At De Stella', won't get played much considering the self-indulgent nature of its contents: it’s simply a man reciting a list of food items in Swedish (at least I think they’re food items) over a bleep house beat. Either way, it's the worst (albeit only) cross between a cookbook and house music I've ever heard. Ridiculous? Yes. Brilliant? No.

Then after you listen I will ask you if you feel a zinga in your ass.

Thu, 21 Feb 2008After just getting done reading the 'I Feel Speed' thread and the backlash at the reviewer's rating, I'm kind of surprised to find the reactions in this thread. I'm a fan of Zinga, for sure. At De Stella is fine, too. At least they seem earnest.

Thu, 21 Feb 2008I play At De Stella over Zinga any time. Zinga is too big room and cheesy for my likes, and I really don't think it's that good a followup to Viktor Casanova - I was expecting something deeper and tweaked out...not so clubby. At De Stella is a bit flatter sounding than I would have liked, but it works well in a nice chill afterhours set.

Mon, 18 Feb 2008I must be crazy, I love the Dramadub and would open a mix with it no problem! I also love the No Brochili mix of At De Stella (Beatport) very minimal but works great in a mix.

Sun, 17 Feb 2008Italoboyz are great guys and they do precieve some kind of a selling aura. However the tracks are terrible, especially 'at de stella'. I mean, Im norwegian and I do understand sweedish, and what the guy talks about is, ham, coffe with cream, weather and similar things. I just cant believe how a label like GP could add this to their catalouge!!! Why cant they put out more stuff from people like Anthony Collins and Efdemin in theese desperate times to get some proper quality music back on the... More
