‘Recovery Idea’ is a track from 2007’s Whistleblower, the album hailed by many as Vladislav Delay’s return to form. While there are plenty who maintain he never went off point, Whistleblower does indeed recall the heady deepness of Delay’s early dub experiments on Chain Reaction circa 2000, and ‘Recovery Idea’ has all the elements of what made Multila great: dark sub-aquatic bass, crackling glitch and unfurling rhythmic complexity.

Fledgling Italian label Semantica has taken on ‘Recovery Idea’ as a remix project, spreading the original and three new interpretations across two releases. First up, the original is paired with a remix from Semantica label boss Svreca, who hollows out the meat and hardens up the percussion for a stilted result.

The real treasure of this project is on second installment. In an inspired move, Semantica calls in Modern Love’s resident atmosphericist Andy Stott do a remix, and the results are outstanding. Stott distils the thick atmosphere of the original with his trademark metallic reductions and hi-hat/kick propulsion, and with a super smooth bassline adds swing and funk. The dark washes of the original now sit behind a sharp foreground that’s dancefloor friendly yet still deep and detailed enough for headphones. A wonderful combination of two very different, but complementary sound palettes.

Where Stott takes the deep road on the A-side, Fibla takes the high road on flip with punchy, staticy beats that ends folding into itself with strings. Vladislav Delay’s track and Stott’s remix on one record would have been the ideal ‘Recovery IDea’ here, and while this release marks it out as one to watch, whether Svreca’s Semantica label can top this early coup remains to be seen.

Tue, 13 May 2008Stott's mix is indeed a gem. Most of his output is of late, the Bad Landing EP, Bolivar mix and Modern Love single sider Hostile are all very strong tracks. ?
