- The second installment in disco leftfielder Lovefinger's Black Disco series sports three re-edits by Rong artist Lee Douglas, recently responsible for a italo-tinged remix of Juan Maclean's 'Happy House.' Both volumes (the first a collaborative effort between Lovefingers and Nitedog) evince eagle eyes for rough diamonds ripe for the knife—a talent equally on display at Lovefinger's deep-digging mp3 blog. The comeback disco-edit, first popularized by the likes of Ron Hardy and Greg Wilson, presents the energy of the whole wonky disco revival in its raw form: what binds all the super-loosely labeled disco subgenres like balearic, cosmic, beardo or italo is a love for surgical intrusion into obscure strands of disco DNA. It's an experimental science that Lovefingers & crew have been practicing for some time.
Vol. 2 is a less hairy or spacey affair than its predecessor. It's more content to sweat out an earthen groove than take flight. There's a strong Latin vibe at play: Spanish guitar flair introduces 'Cum N' Go''s sex-drenched female singer whose coos amp up the track's alluring synth-tinged energy. The stand-out 'Fuego,' a slow-burn stomp, catches fire when it gets overtaken by a chorus of Spanglish speakers whose brazen lead evokes a Latina Pat Benatar—then the groove gets laced with harp swirls and deadlocks into a heavy handclap strut. The closer 'Hide N' Seek' is straight, serviceable disco, workable for the floor if you don't feel like flipping vinyl, but lacking in both the erotic edge and impeccable taste of its companions.
