Shadi Megallaa - Giza Visa EP

  • Quite why Shadi Megallaa opted to entitle his latest production in scouse (Liverpool) vernacular I don't know. What I am quite sure of though, is that this is another sleazy grind that heralds a return to more discerning dance floors of Chicago-inflected sleaze. The Windy City's own Siteholder Recordings has been pushing this sound for a while now, and Megallaa's tune sounds tailor-made for the sweaty recesses of the darkside populated by the likes of Jamie Principle, Sleazy D and Green Velvet while sounding unmistakably modern at the same time. The original mix is a dirty grind that doesn't do anything spectacular, but has a nice off-key bell punctuating the rhythm. It's serviceable, but doesn't hit the heights of the Mikael Stavostrand remix, with its squelchy handclaps and door-knocking percussion. The Z@pMuten remix, meanwhile, has a dubbier feel but retains the dank feel of the original while adding the bounce of Stavostrand's remix and losing the vocal. The Michal Ho collab "Put Your Phones On, Turn the Bass Up," is a digital exclusive addition to this release, but it's probably the funkiest thing on offer here, being the most bass-heavy offering as well as the most eventful. A slow groove that sounds a bit like an outtake of the original mix of "Giza Visa," it's altogether better upholstered and well worth the admission price alone.
