Clipz - Give It To Me

  • If you're sick of drum & bass that takes itself too seriously, then Clipz is the antidote. The best thing about his music is that you can tell just by listening that he couldn't care less whether it pleases the more po-faced sections of the drum & bass scene. His music often seems to be the work of a hyperactive child—full of brash synth melodies that are almost cartoon-like in their simplicity, and stomping drums arranged in unconventional patterns. Say what you like about Clipz, but he's never subtle, and that's his greatest attribute. On "Give It to Me," Clipz goes for an intense vocoder sample—a machine voice like a souped-up Steven Hawking. Once the track kicks in, the key feature is space. Clipz leaves plenty of room between the slabs of electronic bass, giving his metallic drums room to breathe. The pauses between bass hits are important not only for the success of this track, but because it also offers DJs more scope to mix the tracks creatively. "Give It to Me" is begging to be chopped, switched and double-dropped, and for this reason it could well have longevity. On the flip, Clipz reworks his own track "Offline." The tune starts with a simple synth melody that is quite beautiful in its unpretentious simplicity. Once again, it shows how Clipz's independent attitude frees him up to make some really unique music. Once the track drops, however, it becomes clear why Clipz is not to everyone's tastes. The abrasive mid-range bass on "Offline" seems programmed to annoy. And perhaps it was. It's a drilling machine siren, like a sustained computer error tone. Irritating, yes, but the genius of this track is that it'll cut through a mix like a knife, grabbing people's attention in the loudest clubs. You can't ignore this, however much you may try.
