- First came the electroclash revival. Tiga, Peaches, Miss Kittin and Fischerspooner all released new albums within a space of a few months this year, and suddenly everyone was dancing like it was 2001. Now, hot on the heels of the announcement that Daft Punk are scoring the soundtrack to the Tron sequel, fellow French duo Cassius—AKA Hubert "Boom Bass" Blanc-Francard and Philippe "Zdar" Cerboneschi—have released their first material in two years. Yes, folks, French Touch is alive and well.
This double-sided EP—the first on their own label Cassius Records—is fronted by "Youth, Speed Trouble Cigarettes," a guitar-driven, fist-pumping electronica anthem. Zdar's vocals are backed by pounding drums, a catchy riff and an almost ever-present siren. "Almost Cut My Hair" covers American song writing legend David Crosby. It seems a somewhat strange choice, but it undeniably works. It is as equally big and equally fun as "Youth, Speed Trouble Cigarettes," with an incessant, relentless snare that all but grabs your collar and drags you onto the dance floor.
The most recent Cassius release was 15 Again, a concept album which revisited the duo's musical influences in adolescence. The youthful enthusiasm of this record suggests this duo is not ready to grow up just yet: we can only hope.
