The Gym is a great name for a record label, isn't it? Especially for one that starts off its career with two DJ tools that want you to work it. Of course, this being Paul Frick and Scott, DJ tools is a relative term. This isn't track-y minimal house, as much as it's restrained versions of their quirky aesthetic. (Frick and Scott are working together as Brandt Brauer Frick to create a live version of minimal techno on acoustic instruments.) Frick's "What You Got," for instance, is neatly composed with what sounds like a popping upright bass and a busy marimba player in the back.

Scott's contribution to the 12-inch is a bit deeper, featuring an organ lick and a repeated vocal sample of the titular phrase that melts into the fabric of the tune seamlessly. It's got a mystery to it, a smoky feel that belies the duo's history of clickier releases on My Best Friend and Doppelschall. But like their previous single, "La Rentree," there's a certain swing that remains constant despite hugely different sound palettes. It may be too earlier to call it something all their own, but with plenty of Brandt Brauer Frick material on the way, we're certain to find out soon.
