Jessica 6 - Fun Girls (Remixes)

  • Jessica 6 met while they were in Hercules & Love Affair's touring band, but that doesn't mean they're disco. In fact, if anything, "Fun Girl" was closer to synthetic funk than anything else, its light guitar dusting and cushioned beat underlining the group's clear love of '80s pop. Being obvious fans of dance music, though, the trio enlisted Still Going's Liv Spencer for an upbeat house-tinged remix that falls in line with what you might've expected the group to sound like in the first place. It's a delightful track, full of bright melodies and popping bass, as well-produced as you'd expect from the perfectionist. The Worldwarwalter version, meanwhile, stretches things out to more than 12 minutes, luxuriating in an Arthur Russell-lite groove. The track aims for a bit of complexity—hence the mention of Russell—but the bells and whistles don't do much more than distract from its average quality. Neither fascinatingly wacked out nor banging enough to involuntarily excite, it's only once it drops everything out and focuses its attentions that it starts to really work. Whether DJs or audiences will ever get there, though, is a question that probably should have been asked before it was released on vinyl.
