Traversable Wormhole - Vol. 3

  • With the fourth edition already available, it may seem superfluous to review the preceding record in the Traversable Wormhole series, especially as it isn't the type of record that screams for your attention. Presented in the de rigueur anonymous manner, with just the release name printed on the inlay, the music is as evasive, at times almost fleeting. The B-side is a sparse, tripped out affair, grounded in an atonal bass and spiky, offbeat rhythms, but still ethereal enough to guide the listener through the outer reaches of deeper techno. The A-side is more direct, based on a structured, linear arrangement, but by no stretch of the imagination can it be called a standard techno track. While the stepping rhythm could easily find a home on a Shed release, here it's combined with Terrence Dixon/Population One-style pointillist beats, evocative chords and warm, acid bleeps to forge an unusual outcome. The Traversable Wormhole series will never find a home in big room sets, but to expect them to do so would appear to miss the point: This is high-quality techno music designed specifically for the head instead of the feet.
