Paul Bennett - Modone EP

  • Trax, DJ International, Dance Mania and Hot Mix 5: these are the labels that inspired this first release on the new Modernista label and they are referenced on the label's website and press releases with the utmost modesty. Here is a record to live up to that talent for understatement, one that quietly but effortlessly speaks to the classic Chicago sound without any of the posturing and nostalgia that, for some of the more sensitive souls out there, may have coloured (however wrongly) the enjoyment of other classic rooted house music released in 2009. Some may have already heard Paul Bennett's uncredited work on a long-running series of cantering disco re-edits, but the first EP under his own name stands proudly free of samples: the basslines may be vintage Virgo Four and the acid work-outs unmistakably Marcus Mixx, but these four tracks were all made this year on modern machines. One thing mercifully absent from the release is the kind of crackle and fuzz that Trax and co. (with their penchant for recycling vinyl) are well known for; the tracks got the Dubplates & Mastering treatment and you can hear it in the simultaneous warmth and crispness of the sound. Add in some striking cover art and you have more of worth in just one record than many labels manage in ten.
