Disco Nihilist - From One Place to Another

  • Disco Nihlist seemed like an apt name for Mike Taylor over the course of his first few releases. There was little light let into his stripped and functional tracks, seemingly the product of someone that no longer believed in anything. Except perhaps the almighty power of repetition. The second release on Construction Paper, however, showcases the brighter side of the producer's resolutely analogue sound, as each tune on this four track EP has enough melody to let you (perhaps) whistle along. That's not to say that the mode of construction has changed: Taylor's sound palette is similar to his previous material, made up of claps and basslines summoned from cheap hardware. The only word to describe "Easy"'s riff, though, is via words like "mournful" and "yearning," and "Leaving Bull Creek" could pass for ambient techno if heard in the right frame of mind. The B-side jacks harder, with "Gallop" picking up the pace and shoving the wiry melody to the background, and "SH101 Acid" concluding things in a banging fashion. Nonetheless, From One Place to Another is clearly the most versatile we've seen Taylor yet, a nihilist that seems to have softened a bit in his aims since his debut release late last year. Give him enough time, and perhaps we'll be hearing full-fledged disco from the man by the end of 2012.
