- Kerfuffle – Thursday’s from 10PM to 3AM @ Aqua Lounge, Manly
Those crazy lads @ Kerfuffle pretty much out did themselves by delivering award winning DJ Kid Kenobi to the Aqua Lounge for a few beers and bit of a breaks session on Thursday night. Not only has Kid Kenobi won the DMA’s “Best DJ (National)” two year’s running but has recently launched and celebrated the success of his second volume to the MOS Clubber’s Guide to Breaks CD set.
It has been a good few months since Kid Kenobi last hit our shores and since it is so rare that we are graced with talent of this calibre in our parts I was pretty certain it would prove to be a quite popular event. For a small fee ($5 which is so not heard of these days) I put away every excuse under the sun for why I shouldn’t venture out on a school night and set out for hopefully, what I would call a perfect evening out.
I am not sure why no one else has decided to get their act together and rope, I mean invite some good talented Aussie DJ’s to play on the northern beaches before Kerfuffle began but it’s a damn good investment in my opinion. It’s about time the crowd around here was introduced to something a little different than the usual commercial stuff floating around.
For those who do not know the venue, it is basically split up into 3 levels with Kid set to play on the ground level. I arrived probably half way through the resident DJ’s set and was greeted with a non-existent crowd which was disappointing because from what I heard it was pretty damn fine! Time for a few cocktails with some of my crew (2 for 1 before 11PM) and mingling upstairs before venturing back down again to catch the opening of Kid’s set. Kid started a little after 11.30PM and was locked in for a 2 hour set before mixing it up with his brother DJ Kemuri till close. As expected Kid introduced himself to the crowd with GT’s Kid Dynamite which enticed everyone out onto the dance floor.
I think it was half way through the set when a bunch of eager teens killed the dance floor and showed off a few impressive break dancing moves. The crowd, obviously over the spontaneous dance display regained the dance floor and continued to step into Kid’s infectious break beats. Favourite tunes on the night included: Green Velvet’s La La Land and Young MC’s Busta Move 2002 mix, both co-incidentally taken from Kid’s new breaks CD set. I remember an MC Hammer tune chucked in there for good measure (You Can’t Touch This) underlined by another cracker of a break mix but I could’ve been caught up in the moment and as my memory escapes me I really can’t confirm. All in all a fantastic evening with the venue being a little smaller than my usual pick but the tunes making it all the worth while. Every time I see the Kid in action on the dex I walk away that little bit more impressed.
