Ron Deacon feat. The Kat - Secret Garden

  • Arriving off the back of his track on Workshop's tenth EP from earlier this year, Secret Garden is Leipzig-based producer Ronny Turich's first solo 12-inch under the Ron Deacon name. In 2004, Turich scored a minor hit with the electro-disco inclined "Coughing Is Good" as Monopolan, but since then he has disappeared from sight, only to re-emerge with a lusher and more soulful take on the sound. The first mix of "Secret Garden" sees Turich hint at his Monopolan past with beefed up disco drums that take centre stage, burying the jazzy synth work and messy bubbling bassline that occasionally appear. The Kat's sultry but languid vocal takes its cues from the deeper end of US house, and while it's nice enough, the track's regimented and rather static drum line sucks all the life out of what could have been a gorgeous sunshine anthem. His own "Refresh" mix is much more successful, with its restrained minimalist percussion proving that less is often more when it comes to building a commanding groove. Employing immersive modulating synth washes, it's much less saccharine, with an undulating bass tone rearing its growling head at around the halfway mark. The inclusion of a Lowtec remix on the A-side will prick the ears of Workshop fans, and while it may be a long way from the best of his material, its irresistibly shuffling hi-hats, well-placed snap-claps, bouncing bassline and submerged vocal loop strike a fine balance between DJ functionality and the lazy summer vibe that Deacon employs on his own two versions.
