Hackman - More Than Ever

  • If you've been following the constant genre mutations coming out of the UK's bass music scene over the last couple of years, then you'll already be well aware of the deluge of productions hovering below 140 BPM, mixing up UK funky and garage influences in an attempt to forge new strains of house music. One of the more recent additions to this growing movement is Hackman, who originally turned his hand to dubstep on last year's Loophole 12-inch for Studio Rockers, but is now firmly focusing on much more colourful and rhythmically complex productions. His work on this particular EP is his most accomplished to date, with all four cuts showcasing his love of swing and syncopation, with plenty of cut-up and pitched vocal samples giving some feminine balance to the rumbling low-end. This trait is none more apparent than in the title track, and although the squeaky vocal may turn off more traditional house jocks, it's sure to cause a fuss on dance floors that are receptive to UK garage. "Dusk" and "Nobody Minds" are also fairly solid floor fillers, with the latter flexing a slower and more refined take on bassline. The real treat on the package, however, comes with the plinking tropical house of "Gutterflower." Even though it features a gruff, warping bass riff that will get the club's subwoofers pushing an almighty amount of air, it retains a loose and joyous summer vibe that's begging for some outdoor action during this year's festival season.
