Jitterbug - Beaten Trax EP

  • It's obvious that UK producer Jitterbug is influenced by classic US house, and on this follow-up to his 2009 debut for Uzuri, he wears his colours visibly. Whether or not he should be condemned for seeking to imitate his heroes—isn't this something most great producers are guilty of? —is perhaps a matter for another time and another discussion, and this four-tracker warrants assessment in its own right. Featuring rich production and solid, heavy beats, both "Catacombs" and "Dune Buggy" are excellent deep house tracks, in the tradition of Prescription and Guidance. Jitterbug's attention to each element, including the super-tight claps, shaking percussion and spacey chords, ensure that both reach the highest standard. In a nice touch, Jitterbug dedicates "Thanx Spencer" to Chicago producer Spencer Kincey, AKA Gemini, who apparently has fallen on hard times. However, it's not just a token nod; the track's low-slung groove, driving bass and techno melodies are reminiscent of the sound that Gemini pioneered on releases like "A Moment of Insanity." Finally, Jitterbug drops "Ancient Ruins," a club-friendly track based on a filtered disco riff and driving guitar lick. He may be in creative thrall to his heroes, but his release is so beautifully crafted that it shines like a diamond in the morass of sludge that is the contemporary deep house scene.
