L-Vis 1990 - Forever You EP

  • James Connolly's work as L-Vis 1990 has been as identified by his pop instincts as much as his dance floor nous, so it's not a surprise that this EP is his poppiest work yet. "Forever You" builds on repeated-and-echoed you's that wind through it like a semi-parody of "Hyph Mngo," but the focus is on the song—nothing too groundbreaking there, but Shadz's understated soul-inflected vocal sells it fine, and so does a filtered breakdown that works as a bridge. The instrumentals—the roughly bouncy "Into the Stars," with its constantly winding thin synth line; the fizzy acid "Reprise"—play loose. So does "Do You Remember?"—only in the wrong direction. If you're into spoken vocals issuing bromides about the power of house music, it pays to be picky, and this one is pretty mealy: six minutes of variations on it-just-makes-you-feel-good, delivered in a voice that seems to aim for delightfully sleazy, only to come across as something closer to a gym ad. It's an example of how playing to the bigger crowds can hobble as well as open you up.
