Funktrust Survival

  • After a hard days partying at Field Day, some people just wanted more and there were many clubs open on New Years Night offering some serious entertainment to help the groovers get their bodies funkin'. Funktrust's Survival has been the after-event for many, especially since the FT boys have made such a good name for themselves over the past 2 years (almost). Survival has followed on from many huge events such as 02's Field Day and Vibes On A Summer's Day. I was at Field Day until the very end and what a messy day that was. From the rain in the afternoon to just being trashed at the very end after 2 days of partying and work. Definitely not in the right mood to go home, Globe was the perfect chill out, and it seemed that many more Field Dayers shared the same sentiments I did as the line to get in extended out to the end of the street, with the club still jam packed upstairs. Learned Hand was warming up the top floor with his FT brand of funky, anthemic hip hop, big beats and breaks. Kuya followed on from Learned Hand with his cut up brand of hip hop complete with tricks and scratches you'd expect from an ITF competitor. Joining him on the decks was his Sony Vaio laptop, with Final Scratch on it, featuring his remix of everybody's current favourite hip hop tune, Eminem's Without Me. Seeing Final Scratch in action is quite amazing as it does everything vinyl does in MP3 format. Downstairs saw Mark Walton rip up the basement with some nu-skool breaks and electro, as they usually do when they have 2 floors open. Personally, it's more of what I'm into and as always, Walton doesn't disappoint. TCR, Fingerlickin, Marine Parade - you name it, he probably played it, but not all anthems, he usually plays the stuff you don't normally get to hear from other DJ's - keeping the bass heavy and the beats chunky. Downstairs also saw another special guest, Spikey Tee a vocalist from Mark Rae's Grandcentral label spinning drum'n'bass to the warmed up crowd. Current anthems such as Shake Your Body and LK got their rotation along with a new remix of Louie Vega's French Kiss which features a nice breakdown and speed up. Spikey was cutting up the beats and scratching throughout his mix, much more than the Scratch Perverts did during their Field Day performance. For those headed down to Vibes this year can catch Spikey spin some jungle and dance like crazy, much like he did when Walton took over right after his set. Back upstairs was Somatik and Will Styles right after him, but by this time, I've had enough. 3am and the party is over for this poor reviewer. But it was a lot of fun especially since I felt like I was able to go home compared to how I was right after Field Day. The artwork for Survival, is reminiscent of the reality TV show, Survivor - it truly tests the mettle and endurance of clubbers.
