2 AM/FM - Final Approach

  • This summer Creme Organization released the voluptuous Jak the Box set, an exquisite repackaging of all the tracks previously issued under their classic house and acid-inflected JAK imprint, complete with art prints and a ridiculously small print run. Having summed up the label so sumptuously for the executive fan, Creme have wasted no time in bringing out three solid 12-inches bearing the JAK prefix to further quench the thirst of the masses. JAK 10 gets things back in perfect running order with "Final Approach" by 2 AM/FM, a moody, trippy old-school house maneuver that connives its way gradually and almost prettily out of a querulous, brooding intro. A slow walking, almost creeping bassline and the periodic hum of machinery stake out some bleak terrain while the drums build, finally joined by a lo-fi vocoder melody that adds a taste of the cosmic to what is otherwise firmly within the realm of dark, classic house. There are some touches of recent taste in the production, but musically this is very much in the vein of what Creme has been about for a lot longer than said trends. 2 AM/FM (Tadd Mullinix and D'Marc Cantu) have navigated an intriguing middle course between the sparring trends of electro conservativism and deep house shtick, and thereby come closer to the open-ended, transitional nature of early house music. A husky vocal beams out of the foggy throb in the final minute and a half, assuring us that "love is the way," a reminder perhaps that deep and acid house(s) were once not so very far apart.
