DeadEcho feat. Marc Ashken - She's All Over Me
Label / Save You Records
Cat # / SYR005
Released / December 2010
Style / Tech House, Techno
Rating / 2.5

Just one of the many unfortunate aspects of the music industry is that dance tracks are most often, and necessarily, reviewed away from the club, and while the reviewer can strive to imagine what the tune's effect and scale of impact might be, the fact remains that he or she will probably enjoy it more if it's written to be enjoyed at home. Tracks such as DeadEcho's second release on their own label, "All Over Me," are a club utility—anything more is largely an added bonus—and the remixes support this directly, never straying too far from the moody tech house of the original but instead offering a few different energy levels, and different artists' takes on the aesthetic.

I can say fairly certainly that "All Over Me" would create a cool mood in a club. Not least important to that effect is Marc Ashken's surly spoken male vocal, not afraid to say rude words like "fuck" and "bitch," but it's also the brooding bass riff and techy drums, including a nice stop and four-snare crack in the drop. The vocal is especially reminiscent of the very successful "Mr. Dry" by Tim Green. But whereas descriptions such as "brooding bass" and "techy drums" could apply to hundreds, if not thousands, of tunes, "Mr. Dry" had the kind of personality that added something to the bedroom or the kitchen as well. This one doesn't.

I'm not saying this is a bad record. In fact, it's pretty solid. The remixes are pretty good as well. Jay Haze turns it into a druggy pounder, Marc Ashken's ReSeed ups the dark slinkiness and adds Roland snares and handclaps to good, retro/futuro effect, Pedramovich uses warm, cycling synths that have a hint of sorrow to create a more disco version. Clio's is doomy and lost techno with a sludgy sub-bass and hellish monsters growling from the netherworld, and 102nd Century creates an understated, syncopated network from various elements with attention to detail. They're all more or less upstanding. Whether they will make an addition to your record box, though, will depend on whether they would add enough to what's in there already to justify the outlay.

Thu, 27 Jan 2011The original is 'Original' and I believe its important to recognise producers that push the genre forward. Too much house music is made with the past in mind. Where vintage sounds are always pleasing, pushing the genre forward is good and this record does that. If I had any criticism its that there is probably too many remixes on one record which take you away from the original. Maybe do it over two releases next time?! Kudos to Dead Echo....keep doing what you believe in please!

Thu, 09 Dec 2010It's just been confirmed to me by the reviewer that if you put some olive oil, seasoning and a pinch of paprika on a record and stick it in the oven at gas mark 6 for 45 minutes, let it rest for 10 minutes, it sounds EVEN better. amazing.
