Tensnake in New York City

  • The team behind FIXED have been in the business of promoting dance music in New York City for six years now. It is, as you might expect, no mean feat. Especially in a post-Giuliani scene. By modeling themselves after nights and promoters overseas such as Optimo, Trash, and Bugged Out, Fixed have managed to carve out their own space in the city by bringing in a steady stream of forward-thinking artists. On the occasion of their sixth anniversary, JDH and Dave P called in Hamburg's Tensnake to blow out the candles. The German was making his New York City debut after a successful year in which he found the hearts and ears of house, disco, and techno fans with his indelible "Coma Cat" single and his In the House mix for Defected. Needless to say, he was in the right place on this night in NYC at a FIXED event. Photo credit: James L Upon arrival, hosts JDH and Dave P were spinning their usual varied mix, which included top shelf electro, vocal house and disco, to a full dance floor of eclectic club-goers who were in a noticeably good mood. The energy was reaching its height just as Tensnake set up for his live set, and he quickly capitalized by opening with his banging "Get It Right." He didn't slow down, going through his catalog hard and fast—the BPMs were noticeably sped up for most of his material. Crowd favorites included: "In the End," Holding Back My Love" and, of course, "Coma Cat." The set culminated with his throwback remix of Azari & III's "Reckless with Your Love." Unfortunately, the DJ duo that were up next—Villa, in from Ghent Belgium—wasn't able to keep the attention of the large room full of clubbers for very long after Tensake's power-packed live set. Their mix of electro and '80s pop re-edits came off more kitsch than substantial. Still, with a solid warmup from the residents and Tensnake's triumphant live set, it was hard to complain on this night celebrating Fixed's continued influence on New York club scene.
