Jerome Sydenham - Trombipolution
Label / Drumcode
Cat # / DC75
Released / December 2010
Style / Techno, Tech-House
Rating / 3.5

Jerome Sydenham has turned his hand to a range of styles over his lengthy career, but his first release on Drumcode last year, The Visitation, placed itself right at the darker, harder and more aesthetically submerged end of his discography, in line with the label's usual mode. Here, it's a similar story with some African influences more pronounced.

It's not just the pachyderm on the pack shot: it's the lumbering mass of elephantiasis that infects the wax within. In "Trombipolution," repetitive, deep trumpeting swings slowly over dense marshes of charging techno. The same murky foundation permeates "Push to Enter," but it's mostly the organic lumbering of the kicks that gives this release its natural feel. Sydenham's many years of production experience enable him to inflate them massively while keeping a clear mix.

Digitally-speaking, each track offers something unique; "Amp," for example, will probably appeal the most to those who seek hardness, with the kick breathing machinistically, as well as a warm chunky synth swelling at the track's core. "In the Zone" feels jazzier, and "Bite" is breathtakingly hurried, urging you to never stop dancing. There are no particularly memorable elephants—sorry, elements—meaning that it's probably quite a meat-and-potatoes addition to a crate, but of that meat, there's about six tons.
