Gregory Shiff - Exit and Entrance 2

  • The minute I first heard Gregory Shiff’s “Exit and Entrance 1” LP, I knew I would be a fan for life. Named as one of URB Magazine’s “Next 100”, Gregory Shiff continues to up the ante with each successive release. His latest record for Stewart Walker’s Persona Records, “Exit and Entrance 2” is another gem that leans more toward the techno side of tech house. Following up on the first “Exit and Entrance” LP, Shiff’s music is truly progressive – infusing break beats with spacey ambiance…techy sounds with thick bass lines. Side A begins with the hard hitting “October”, throwing Shiff’s signature melodies over a subtle yet groovy bass line. Greg’s tracks tend to sound like a journey themselves, and “October” is a perfect example as to why that is. “How Young Am I” comes next, hitting a little harder and leaning more toward the techno edge. Both tracks on Side A are bound to keep a dance floor happy with their driving bass lines and graceful synth sounds. Side B leans a lot more toward melody, beginning with the beautiful break beat track entitled “Subway Floods”. It is a perfectly laid out tune that can work well either early in a DJ’s set; or late into the morning as the sun begins to rise. “Other People’s Stories” (if nothing else, you’ve got to love Shiff’s song titles) again focuses on melody, laid out over a tech-influenced beat. Each track takes on a persona of its own – quite proper for a release on Persona records. For more information on Gregory Shiff, make sure to log on to his website at www.gregoryshiff.com.
