Sasha in Sydney

  • Much like Christmas, it appears these days that the big name DJ's only come to Australia once a year. In this instance, it was Sasha's time to visit and say hello to his Southern Hemisphere devotees. You may remember I put to words his last gig in Sydney as being one of the best parties I had attended in this city, so forgive me if I went into this one with high expectations. (Especially considering the gig had been moved to a slightly bigger venue to avoid mosh pit-like scenes at the Laundry.) Normally I don't like to compare gigs, but this show fell just short of the epic scenes that unfolded at that aforementioned garden party at the Laundry. The Forum was a darker setting and, as such, Sasha's set had a bit more oomph to it—especially towards the end. Starting eloquently with the superb "Inspirado Por Usted" by Bruyndonx Patrick, the set eventually found its rhythm with big pounding productions from the likes of Maetrik with "Snorkel" and Midland's remix of "Leitmotif." One of the biggest reactions of the night came to the trippy sounds and bouncing basslines of "Kings in Exile" by Fritz Kalkbrenner. When the warm pads of Joris Voorn's remix of "Callisto" echoed, I was hoping it would lead to a shower of melodic tunes. But it was a rare moment. Nonetheless, Sasha made up for it with a lot of big room moments. Special mention must also go to Robbie Lowe and Matttt for their warm-up sets. Matttt in particular kept the energy and excitement at a solid level, ensuring the dance floor was full when Sasha began. It's just a shame that Sydney is becoming somewhat of a Nanny state: The night had to end at 2 AM, a time when the party tends to start at some of the better clubs around the world.
