Dragosh - The Warm Up

  • Last time Dragosh was reviewed on RA, the conclusion was that, after leaving classical and jazz music circles, the young Romanian didn't quite know what to make of all the possibilties presented by their electronic counterpart. "The Warm Up" seems to confirm that notion, but more to the point, it affirms that Dragosh has matured, thrown off his past and embraced synthesis wholeheartedly. Title track "The Warm Up" does exactly as it says, diving straight into a wicked groove, assisted by sharp vocal stabs and an alternating clap pattern. With unignorable allure, it paves the way for the other, less catchy tracks to woo. It's hard to know what sets this particular club cut apart from its less interesting contemporaries, but in the end, it's just one of those occasions where everything sits together perfectly, with the sum greater than the parts. Perhaps it's Dragosh's history and ergo, understanding of instrumentation, which makes this a recurring theme. None of the individual components are particularly special, and indeed, some of the TR-808's more hackneyed sounds have been used with little regard for their previous lives. Nevertheless, an undeniable talent for songwriting shines through. An abundance of groove abides, especially in big roomer "For Mepa Trate." Perhaps there's more than just songwriting talent though, as The Warm Up has a greater sense of progression than some long players. From the aforementioned vocal stabs and swaying groove, things advance in several ways: the vocals become more verbose and the beats harder. The release is a kind of musical rainbow; several graded takes on the same idea.
