Zoovox - Zoovox Theme

  • Rare in the 21st century is the arrival of a 12-inch on my doorstep, but such is the case with this one-sided blue sleeved single. It's fitting, then, that the record itself harkens back to a simpler time. The single is the work of diligent DJs about town Ben Gephardt and "Tropical" Jeremy Campbell, the latter known for bringing Afro cosmic DJs like Beppe Loda to the US and DJing gritty tracks at upscale non-clubs like MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York City. Taking a snatch of cartoon dialogue as its starting point, the duo proceed to build up a track that touches on Miami Vice helicopter chases, the classic gated drum attacks of Phil Collins, and ever-cresting arpeggiations. With its candy-colored label art of orange palm trees, the synth line also brings to mind Johnny Harris's low rider classic "Odyssey." An auspicious beginning for both artist and label.
