It was probably only a matter of time before James Burnham, AKA Burnski, returned to Dessous Recordings. The British producer's style of organic house is incredibly well suited to Steve Bug's Pokerflat counterpart. On the A-side, Burnham crafts a slow-burning trip with "Sometimes Takes Longer." The key here is groove; a groove that remains constant and reliable, underpinning tasteful vocal snippets and neat claps. Things progress minutely but measurably, leading to rhythm sticks and fast-fading swooshes later on.
On the B-side, two tracks replace groove with vestiges of cheekiness. True to its name, "There's a Culprit" is kind of shady, too, like the soundtrack for an illegal drinking hole. The most interest comes from the vocal details, with successively higher pitched versions rippling swiftly into silence behind one another over the shifty bassline. "Watch Out" is attractive for the same reason, with a happy child delivering the message accompanied by hissing hi-hats and more funk. Perhaps it's not the most innovative release this year, but it's certainly a worthy one to the label's already impressive catalogue.
