Aybee - 11 11

  • Aybee doesn't confound expectations on 11 11. It's relaxing deep house that has the chunky, warbling vintage bass sound that's seemingly everywhere. On "Steps" it's really warm and rhythmic at the same time, which is a very good thing. But whereas the EP isn't markedly outfield—like some of the tracks off his Ancient Tones album were last year for example—it does have a faintly edgy tinge to it. The kicks on "11 11" sound like the reds on the PA have been maxed out, the heavy mixture of synth lines on "Nigg#s and Space Machines" is a bit stomach churning, and there's heavy use of a white noise/formant filtered pad on "Steps" that feels like it should be calming, but isn't really. Indeed, Aybee doesn't do anything much different than you'd expect on 11 11, but he does just enough to keep you on your toes.
