Marcel Fengler - Thwack Remixes

  • In its five years of operation, Mote-Evolver has stood as a platform for Luke Slater's work as both L.B. Dub Corp and Planetary Assault Systems, while playing host to a rotating cast of producers often affiliated with unrelenting brands of techno. Marcel Fengler is one of those individuals, having released the no-nonsense Thwack EP in 2010, his only production venture outside Ostgut Ton—and arguably his most successful to date. Now, one year later, Norman Nodge, Mike Parker and Slater himself have climbed onboard for reworks with mixed results. Taking up the A1, fellow Berghain resident Nodge chooses to lower "Thwack"'s original intensity, taking it into comparatively restrained DJ tool territory for an interesting but relatively safe workout. Slater's Planetary Assault Systems reinterpretation then proceeds to steal the show. Using Fengler's clanking percussion and abrasive midrange—coupled with a swag of sweeping effects—the Londoner hasn't strayed too far from what was already a dance floor bomb, so you can expect the end result here to do similar kind of damage. Mike Parker takes the same route as Nodge, but reels in the percussion for a kind of Drexciyan groover that, like Nodge, ends up being a nice tool but little more. Finally, Slater suits up as L.B. Dub Corp for a digital bonus, laying down a percussion-heavy roller that serves as a pleasant counterpoint to the blunt hostility of his A-side effort.
