- Andy Hunter's new album Exodus feels like a ride between early nu-skool breaks, early rave sounds, early progressive house and early Massive Attack style trip hop - everything's early! It's probably the reason that it's been named after one of the earliest books in the bible. Speaking of which, Andy also seems to incorporate a few bible verses into the album and the liner notes.
The album starts off with early breaks sounds with Go and The Wonders Of You both sounding like they timewarped in from 1997's nu-skool breaks sound - early Crystal Method. The second tune especially sounds like a remake of BT & Tsunami One's classic "Hip Hip Phenomenon" which some people still regard as one of the first nu-skool breaks tunes.
Andy also moves onto progressive house - Radiate which sounds like Sonic Animation's "Love Lies Bleeding", trance - Amazing and Sandstorm Calling (is that supposed to be related to that Darude track?) and even some Trip Hop beats with Show. But that's the thing really, the album feels like it's already been done before - way before. Like last century man! Add in some Moby-esque house/rave tune Angelic and Exodus feels like a recap of the 90's possibly produced better using today's tools and production techniques.
It sounds a little dated and perhaps I'm just not a fan of albums which seem to delve into every single genre listed in the dance music section of your local HMV/Sanity/whatever. Unless you're into 90's dance nostalgia then it may be best to overlook this, as there are others out there looking to push to dance sound to it's limits.
