Christian Loeffler & Steffen Kirchhoff - Baltic Sea

  • Having already contributed to two of the first three releases by nascent Cologne label, Ki Records, friends and musicians Christian Loeffler and Steffen Kirchhoff share a side apiece on this beautiful EP of atmospheric and deep techno. Loeffler bagsies the A-side; "The War" features signature warm, melodic pads, backwards vocal excerpts and little vignettes of synths dropped in across the piece. It's a glistening, yet somewhat mournful slice of smooth techno. "William" is a more menacing affair. Loeffler paints and is an accomplished photographer and there's a widescreen feel to this mildly jacking workout of bassy synth growls, 808 claps and chiming melodic passages. Flip over and Kirchhoff, a like-minded musical soulmate and mutual sounding board for Loeffler, stitches hissing hi-hats to twinkling synth flourishes and a brooding bassline on "The Beast in Me." Think Slam in a reflective mood. "Silk Skies" completes an EP full of promise, waves of analog synths, snappy drum programming and reverb-laden, icy melodic trills. Balearic, or should that be Baltic, techno anyone?
