Radical Majik - The Boardroom Presents Radical Majik's Mental Health

  • The first release on this ominously-entitled label collects three tracks that distil their collective influences to such an extent that one feels sonically saturated after listening to them. "Fianchetto" is the type of easily driven, chugging disco grove with Italo influences that has found a home on the likes of Permanent Vacation. It ploughs a steady path towards dance floor abandon through a field of dubby effects and a bittersweet breakdown, being piloted by an unerring bass. Although "What Next" and "Mental Health Time Bomb" are very different in composition, both being jerkier affairs where the bass plays a unifying role once again. "Fianchetto" is one of the best examples of a track of its type I've heard all year. It's still got legs despite being almost ten minutes long, and on the whole this is a fine and diverse release; which is to be expected from the likes of Rad Rice and Steve Boardman AKA Radical Majik, due in no small part to an internship served at Rotter's Golf Club.
