Dixon in Barcelona

  • In the shadow of the monastery that stood behind Dixon, it was obvious why Innervisions had returned to El Poble Espanyol for the Barcelona leg of their Lost In A Moment series. The space made perfect sense, with a panoramic view of the city on one side and a bright courtyard for a dance floor, not far from the open-air club La Terrrazza. As Dixon played a modest middle bill slot, there could be no doubt as to why he's so frequently named as one of the most consistently excellent DJs out there. The entire set showed a skill for pacing that few can match, with the well-placed use of both Gladkazuka's "El Untitled" and The XX's "Reunion" being highlights.  Henrick Schwarz's live show, which had none of its shine removed on what must have been the fourth time I'd seen it this year, was one of the main talking points of the day. His astounding remix of Emmanuel Jar's "Kuar" still hasn't lost its audience-rousing effect in spite of being played out regularly since its release three years ago. The only criticism anybody within earshot seemed to have was that parts of the set were unnecessarily effect-heavy, but overall Schwarz delivered one of the best performances of the day.  Closing the party was Kristian Beyer of Âme, who showed the same kind of talent for track selection and pacing as Dixon had hours before, and who was rewarded with what seemed like the entire crowd staying until the end. The inclusion of Ten Walls' "Gotham" further cemented its status as one of the standout tracks of the summer. As the sun set it was hard to imagine this showcase not being one of the best that the always-saturated week during Sónar had to offer.
