After Ours @ YU

  • After hearing the great hype of the revamping of the old Soho into a 3 night extravaganza on the weekends over summer, i decided to give After Ours at Yu on the second Sunday night a whirl. With the likes of Shamus, Ben Korbel, Alex Taylor and Seven breaking out some lively tunes I was hpoing for the best. Much to my dislike, I only managed to arrive at 11 missing an hour of Ben Korbel whipping the crowd into a fukny frenzy. For a man primarily known as the rising star of deep progressive and nu-school breaks he certainly didnt disappoint upon my entry. A King Unique mix of the new Jamiroquai track and paulmac's Just the Thing were on his agenda as well as a previously unseen display of DJ Rectangle-like scratching. Ben received a warm applause with everyone realising he is a man of many talents and certainly has big future in the industry. After promising myself for weeks to go and see the man they called Shamus he finnaly took to the decks at midnight. With the influence in his music being strongly funked-up house anf flutey jazzy tunes, i was hoping he would not whip out monotonous vocal tunes for the duration of his two hour set. Was i happily surprised. If anyone had the opportunity to see Eric Morrilo earlier this year, i would have to say that Shamus has been affected by his works greatly. His methodology was one where he would bring out a few uplifting vocal tunes before dropping the music back with some serious kicking deep number. Daft Punk's, Stronger Deeper Faster Longer (i hope thats the order), The One's Flawless, Groove Armada's Superstylin, Basment Jaxx's Where's Your Head At, a Harry Choo Choo and Morillo influenced number of Subliminal records were all apart of his repatoire (sorry should have tune spotted bit more had i known the music a bit better). His music had substance and so did he. As he pointed out to me with the style of music he plays, it is important to look like your having a ball behind the decks or the crowd simply won't have fun. True very True Shamus and he let everyone know that through his movin and a shakin. With Alex Taylor (reknown for gigs in Ibiza at Space on the terrace....oh yeah) running slightly late Shamus played til about 2.20am and Alex immediately kicked in where young Shamus had left off with that ringing female vocals. The crowd were still up for it when i decided to call it a night at about 3am hoping to stay up and watch the Aussies qualify for the World Cup, which was not to be. I said to many, this in my books is the place to be a Sunday night over summer and i personally believe that it is going to be a huge success drawing many from the one and only 'Sounds on Sunday'. The management crew there have done fantastic with the interior design giving it a more homely feel than that of the old Soho. The toilets are something you can only experience yourself......i'll let you go there for the experience. Friendly people, both inside and out. Drinks are slightly pricy but aren't all these days. The dress code is minimal, with comfort being the chief idea. A sound system which has a great deal of substance for a cosey club. And plenty of seating area - which will become a high priority for many after the long weekends ahead. For $5 for members and $10 everyone else.....i believe its a top draw venue and club to spend a lazy Sunday night or kick on from a big weekend behind you. If your expecting something don't, because i feel the best way to approach new things is with an open mind. If your that kinda person you'll have a ball like i did. I have been to Yu on a saturday (Congress) and its alot different to that, musically and socially, so as ever do not expect the same thing from Fuzzy night in night out. Therefore i can only expect that a friday night (Ear Candy) would too offer somethind totally wild, so for all not yet acquainted with Yu i definitely recommend giving it a look in. Anywase, with a gorgeous long summer and plenty of parties ahead of us, I can only expect the best from a constantly developing and diversifying Sydney clubbing scene....Keep up the good work to those out there.....and remember everyone a simple 'hello' can make someone out there's night.... Take it easy BeranJ
