NY Stomp - I Feel It Comin' On

  • It's taken two years for Gerd to return to the NY Stomp project he blooded in 2012 with the ubiquitous "The NY House Track." That functional name could be applied to anything else in this moniker's oeuvre, but while there's no shortage of producers digging into New York's '90s club archive, few do so with the same balance of reverence and creativity. As he did on its predecessor, Gerd offers an anthemic club jam ("I Feel It Comin' On") and something more muted. Where the former style won out last time, here it's the pillowy subs of "Beatattak," fluttering beneath wobbling pads, that provide the most joy. Compared to their elegance, the title track comes off as brash, its strident kicks and stabs lacking subtlety. It's doubtless effective amid smoke in the early hours, but in two months it's the flip you'll still be reaching for. Again, as on the debut NY Stomp EP, the remixes don't meet the title track's benchmark. The "Bass 'n' Dirt" mix is, basically, fidget. Ovis's take is better, sticking closer to the original but beefing up its low-end. At least, until the final third, when in comes all manner of Solid Groove-style wobs and overdrive.
