Anthony Naples - OTT / ZTL

  • It's been a while since we heard anything from Anthony Naples that could be called a "big tune." Recent EPs like Us Mix and the excellent Love No Border were basically club records, but they showcased the US artist's impressive range rather than his power to create huge dance floor moments. OTT / ZTL, the first release on Naples' new ANS label, is different. Its two ‎tracks each have bold, anthemic qualities, albeit with very different moods in mind. "ZTL" seems to be IDM-influenced, something we've not really heard from Naples. Three different synth lines with that classic bittersweet '90s vibe almost, but not quite, coalesce into something great. There's too much happening at the track's payoff points, with the whistled synth line in particular fighting for attention. Still, DJs who use loops and cue points could create an effective reedit. "OTT" is, indeed, OTT. It's one of those rowdy bombs that'll split opinion, its battering snares and mammoth synth line designed to smack you across the face. It could be too much played at the wrong moment, but it's easy to imagine this one creating chaos in the club.
