Lookin’ Good, Candy’s Apartment, 4 September 2004

  • I have never really liked Candy’s Apartment - I don’t know why but I have never gelled with the venue. Whether it is because it is in the Cross or the exact venue itself I have not quite decided. Saturday night at Lookin' Good, however, went a long way to changing my mind and, dare I say it, but I really enjoyed my evening there. Lookin’ Good run by Adam Coverdale has been going for around 7 months and has established itself as a night with a unique sense of humour. On walking into Lookin' Good you are usually greeted by the promoter himself and one of his novelty posters. This months instalment of comical pearls of wisdom included "Freddy Starr ate my hamster but its all Lookin' Good". Adam told me that he spends Saturday afternoon with a couple of friends thinking up the posters. I have no idea where he gets the inspiration from … Ben Kelly, a regular to Lookin’ Good warmed up the empty venue playing a fabulous mix of party tunes and floor fillers including "Ultimate Funk" and a remix of Professional Widow that I had not heard before. Ben also spent time playing in the usual girlie domain of the Powder Room after the DJ booked for that time slot didn't show. Fortunately he had some records that were prefect for the change of scenery and kept the music to a more loungey style and also treated us to some scratching. It was in fact a perfect way to start the evening listening to some funky tunes, talking to friends and browsing some of the books and magazines that were scattered around the back room. A particular favourite of mine was “Dolls World” magazine which included a feature on Dolls with Googly eyes. The mind boggles it really does. Lookin Good's resident, Mark Dynamix was taking a well deserved break so Cadell and Johnny Gleeson filled his spot playing a perfect blend of funky house and some well known tracks to get the dance floor well and truly jumping. Although not completely packed Candy’s was comfortably full, leaving enough room to cut loose on the dance floor and still creating a real party atmosphere. Tom de Silva, the new monthly resident of the night was in his element adhering to the music policy of tracks of the moment and anthems of the last 10 years. Personal favourites from Tom were “Bring it down” and “I Can’t get enough”. I managed to pop back into the Powder Room briefly and the girls were keeping it funky and cool. The decks that are set up in the piano are a nice touch and despite the scary magazines that are littered around the place, the Power Room has a comfortable and laid back atmosphere. It is a perfect area for sitting back, chilling out and listening to some cool tunes for a complete change of pace. Adam Coverdale played the main set of the evening and in between performing some fabulous tricks and sublime mixes he also did some impromptu MCing. In between shouts of “Gilligan’s, Gilligan’s, Gilligan’s”, “Balls” and “Arse” he played a remix of “Dirty Cash” which got the whole club singing along and “Insomnia” by Faithless absolutely which went off and got the place absolutely pumping. Mike McGrath was up last and kept the remainder of the Lookin' Good punters dancing away till the early morning. Despite offers to carry on at Gilligan’s I opted for the much more sensible option of a cup of tea across the road. Going to Gilligan's certainly doesn't keep you Lookin' Good.
