Buckfunk 3000 - 2 Much Booty/Command Your Soul

  • Buckfunk 3000, otherwise known as Si Begg and SI Futures drops his latest Nu Skool/Tech-Funk Breaks EP on new label Bow Wow, and man is it up to his usual high standard! This is actually the first release from Bow Wow, and if they keep this quality up, they’ll definitely become a force on the global breaks scene. The A-Side of this EP has two Buckfunk 3000 originals, 2 Much Booty and Command Your Soul. “2 Much Booty” is your typical Buckfunk 3000 sound: dark, grimey, twisted, techy and so phat it should come with a “wide load” sign printed on the record sleeve! The audible bassline on this tune is already heavy enough to cause an earthquake, but then add in the sub bass you’ll get on a big system, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a stomach turning dance floor destroyer. The vocal is also very cool, giving the track a bit of a Ghetto-Tech/Booty feel, meaning it can fit either into a Breaks set or a Booty set. “Command Your Soul” is on a slightly deeper, more Garage vibe, opting for a slightly messed up beat pattern and some of the grimiest bassline action you’ve ever heard. The vocal on this one is also very tasty. But, even with the bassline action and the beat pattern that’ll have people on the dancefloor asking each other how to dance to it, the track still lacks something, and as such is probably more suited to being a mid-set filler than a peak time monster. The B-Side of this record, the Product 1 Remix of '2 Much Booty' is where it’s at for mine though! Twisted, crunchy beats grind over the top of the chopped up vocal from the original, while some of the filthiest bassline action in existence makes you want to shake what your momma gave ya, but bring your lunch back up at the same time. But that’s not all, this remix comes complete with warped synths and samples, complimenting the already manic insanity that the bassline creates. And then just when you think it’s all over, then comes the Electro breakdown, turning what was a mental Nu Skool Breaks monster into a rollin’ Electro tune with those tasty drawn out basslines we all love. Absolutely top notch stuff! But with that all being said, I do have one complaint with this release: the BPMs. The tracks, when they sit on 0% are around 145BPM, so they aren’t exactly designed to be pitched up by the DJs out there. Unfortunately, pitching them down does make them sound a little strange, especially the Product 1 Remix of “2 Much Booty”, which loses some of its manic effect when you drop the BPMs. Overall though, this is one EP not to be messed with, not to be dropped without caution for the foundations of the building, and definitely not one to be missed!
