- Dominik Eulberg’s Flora & Fauna was undoubtedly one of the minimal highlights of 2004, so it comes as no surprise to see that Traum has decided to release a pair of remix 12”s.
Andre Kraml from Firm Records steps up to remix Der Purpurrote Sonnenuntergang Am Schilfumsäumten Bergsee, the calm lilting closer of Eulberg’s album. Kraml retains the trademark Eulberg nature samples (some lovely birdsong in particular), but little else, bringing the track shuffling back to the dancefloor. The track builds very nicely over the course of seven minutes, starting with little more than birdsong and a shuffling beat. Hitting its stride a good halfway in as more rhythms and a swaggering bass enter, the intensity builds until the very end as more and more layers are added. Some male vocals have also been added to the track, but are fairly unobtrusive and don’t detract from a solid piece of minimal techno.
On the flip side Justin Maxwell, from John Tejada’s Palette Records, faces the somewhat daunting task of remixing Die Invasion Der Taschenkrebse, the slow burning opening track of Eulberg’s album. Maxwell also wisely chooses to move away from the original; giving the track a crisp, digital sound, with high-pitched bleeps and a digital drone/whine that hovers at the edges. The track gets its robotic groove on quite nicely, but never really hits any peaks, and the digital sound may alienate some listeners.
