Ikonika - When You Look At Me

  • Ikonika touches on amapiano with a balmy love song.

  • Ikonika's upcoming EP feels both upbeat and humid, basking in the warm glow of amapiano—its log drums and sinewy basslines—to further update the peppy, glossy house sound she's been refining over the last decade and change. "When You Look At Me" is hardly her first foray into full-on pop, but instead of inviting a guest singer, Ikonika handles the vocals herself, and she melds perfectly into the music. With simple but effective lyrics over subtly neon-streaked synths and an all-powerful bassline—"You've got me in my feels / We should be together"—it reminds me of Hyperdub vocal anthems past, except the feeling here is smouldering and sexy, more of a flicker than a belter. It's moreish, melancholy and just a little mysterious. In other words, Ikonika at her best.
