&ME & Black Coffee - The Rapture Pt.III

  • A slow burner that combines starry-eyed melodic techno with the careful build-up of Afro house.

  • When it comes to unabashedly big room stuff, you can't get much more reliable than Keinemusik, a label which is admittedly not often to my tastes—but I'm taken with label head &ME's latest collaboration with Black Coffee, "The Rapture Pt.III," which comes down to its subtlety. This tune has all the melodrama of an Afterlife anthem, but it's pared way down an Afro house-influenced stagger, and just when you think it's about to boil over, "The Rapture Pt.III" actually falls away to near-silence. The piano feels genuinely emotional, its pathos carefully earned, and the climb back to the the rhythm section is gorgeous. If it weren't done so expertly, it might be nothing more than sushi restaurant house music, but this one's as suited for weepy montages as it is transcendent moments on the dance floor.
