  • Róisín Murphy's voice is remarkably versatile. She can be bittersweet, articulating spoken words with emotional weight, or whimsically otherworldly, dancing around syllables with carefree abandon. On the opener of her new, DJ Koze-produced album, Hit Parade, she takes on a sultry, yearning tone, stretching out words in a rolling drawl. This loose, undulating quality brings to mind a certain Detroit icon with a similarly throaty and unhurried style of singing. On his remix of "What Not To Do," Moodymann adds his own smoky vocals to accompany Murphy's, creating a track that feels like a conversation between two lovers desperate to hold onto their glory days together. He also completely turns DJ Koze's original production on its head. The original feels icy and futuristic, full of eerie synths and warbled, fragmented rhythms with a gloomy mood. In Kenny Dixon Jr.'s hands, it transforms into an intimate jazzy house cut that radiates warmth and sincerity. A lightweight rhythm with a samba-like shuffle and extended keyboard chords play up the tension while Dixon Jr.'s gritty moans turn "What Not To Do" into a powerfully raw and romantic record.
