Mike Shannon - Shijima 3000

  • A big(ish) tech house tune from the king of the endless groove.

  • Where Matt Edwards's Rekids is a reliable home for bona fide big tunes, his sub-label, Special Projects, operates at the deeper end of the club spectrum. Focused on stripped-down and functional techno, the label counts old school purists like DJ Spider and Jon Hester as alumni. For the latest release, Edwards gets even deeper, tapping minimal master Mike Shannon. Shannon takes the opportunity to step a bit outside of his comfort zone by going bit more anthemic than he usually does, though of course that's a relative term. The EP's best track, "Shijima 3000," is loopy and funky, with nine minutes unfolding around a short bass riff and barely-there chord progression. But the drums are fierce, and a bit of extra reverb on the kicks produces a techno-level thwack. Throw in the slightly dramatic EQing and it's about as big room a track as Shannon's ever made—and I'm 100 percent here for it.
