Lila Tirando a Violeta & Sin Maldita – Accela

  • Lila Tirando a Violeta & Sin Maldita land on Hyperdub with a fiendishly intense industrial and techno EP.

  • Lila Tirando a Violeta has never settled on one style of music. 2020's Limerencia had hints of garage ("Maldoror"), schranz ("Noche Totem") and jungle ("Mariposas & Fuego")—to name a few—while last year's Desire Path even had tracks that changed path midway ("Cuerpo Que Flota"). Nor has she ever settled on who she works with. Her last three records were classified as solo albums, but it's never just her. (Tibetan-Canadian artist Sayveeyun, Miami-based Nick León and Ireland's Lighght are three names that pop up regularly.) Tirando shares her latest release, Accela, with Sin Maldita, whose most recent You're Trouble LP was a blend of maximalist IDM and Autotuned pop. Together, they make broken techno with hints of industrial (we were given a glimpse of this on last year's TraTraTrax compilation). But despite being a standout on that record, "Consonante Rótica"'s intensity pales in comparison to Accela. This EP brings a baroque sheen to a heady onslaught of percussion, placing these two among some of the best making this sort of industrial, neo-classical-tinged club music right now. An oppressive militancy engulfs any distinguishable rhythm on Accela. The colossal drums on "Talking Trees" sound like Optimus Prime and the other Transformers marching in formation, while bursts of machine gun percussion cut an equally destructive path through "All Day I Hear The Noise of Waters"'s dreamy soundscape. Harpsichord keys on "Idioglossia" and gentle harp melodies on "Viconian Cycles" add softer touches to the LP's spartan percussion and house it in a suitably epic space. Nowhere does this contrast work better than on "Sabor Inmóvil" where thundering kicks and impish vocals recall the provocative ballroom of Lotic's Heterocetera, and the organ notes on top of it all the baroque grandeur of Vessel's Queen of Golden Dogs. If these are the sorts of comparisons that spring to mind, that can only be a good thing for Lila Tirando a Violeta and Sin Maldita's first full release together. Where Tirando's music has never been this physical before, Sin Maldita's has never been this far emoved from pop. On the one hand it's testament to the way Tirando constantly reinvents her music. On the other, it shows what happens when she sticks with a trusted collaborator. Here's hoping this fantastic duo continue to flesh out their truly impressive sound.
