  • Glitch-hop-inspired emo pop? Something like that, from a young Indian producer.

  • As a 16-year-old beatmaker in 2017, Mumbai-based chrms made honeyed, atmospheric melodies that spoke to his love for artists like Flume and the chiller end of electronic music. Years later, his productions are still dreamy, but burnished with a gritty, sub-heavy finish. For his debut on Hypercolour, the young gun producer explores his love for IDM through breaks and emo-leaning pop. The title track—the EP's deepest and most dramatic cut—has an orchestral quality. A striking build of synths gives way to chopped-up drum patterns, Prefuse 73-style, before chrms' distorted vocals hit, bringing a dance-pop vibe into the mix. By the time the extended, kaleidoscopic breakdown hits, it feels like we're locked into a live set. chrms' foray into dancey glitch-hop is an endearing sign of an ex-bedroom producer maturing in the studio.
