- tINI has never been one to rush herself in the studio. In addition to her roving tINI and the Gang parties, she's one of the most in-demand DJs in the world, but her release schedule has always been sparser than her gigging calendar. That makes 2024 a bit of a surprise. In January, she put out her first 12-inch since 2018 for rising Berlin label Mood Waves and now she's back again with "What What" on distributor and label Off the Grid's latest compilation.
More exciting than this unexpected tINI bumper crop is how her sound has changed. tINI has been sharing the decks with the newest generation of minimal DJs—think Quest, Liquid Earth or Gene on Earth. The modulated bassline on "What What" has a bit of her trademark Ibiza funk, but that's the only spritz of sunshine here. The drums are blown out and sluggish, staggering along in a haze underneath the occasional minor key chord and a clipped vocal sample somewhere between a demonic robotic dog and a broken answering machine. Rather than the Balearic vibes of her older records, things are noticeably darker and meaner.
