- One of the UK's underground heroes cranks out the acid on her debut EP.
- The usual rules and conventions of DJing don't apply to Emerald's mixes or DJ sets. Whether she's rocking Glastonbury or hosting her weekly three-hour dance music show on Rinse>, '90s jack tracks morph into UK techno, and peak-time hardcore imperceptibly turns into afterhours minimal. Her debut EP for DJ Haus's Unknown to the Unknown takes that versatility into the studio. Supreme Being translates the energy and range of her DJing into a 12-inch that emphasizes the magic of acid three different ways.
With "More Than You," a collaboration with UK garage staple Ollie Rant, she turns out a festival-ready house tune. There's some serious swing to the snares, and the 303 lead snarls across the stereo spectrum. By the end of the track even the slightly off-putting vocal "I don't like this groove" sounds anthemic. The 303 grumbles rather than wails on the record's best cut, "Show You," where the drums are delayed and druggy but the plucked bass solos in the breakdowns will pull even the most weary raver back to life. The sleazy electro of the title track sits somewhere between these two—murky sub bass plodding alongside an acid line that weaves in out of 808s like a motorcycle navigating congested traffic.
An EP that covers electro, big room house and techno in under 20 minutes is no easy feat. But Supreme Being doesn't feel disjointed. Instead, it sounds like the work of a producer who is practically overflowing with ideas and genuinely just loves club music in all its guises (a feeling I also had when reading her RA Podcast interview). Packed with energy and high on the adrenaline, Supreme Being is a love letter to the 303 and all its squelchy wonder.
