  • Marie Davidson and Soulwax are a match made in heaven. Even before being remixed by Soulwax, 2019's "Work It," from Davidson's Working Class Woman sounded like something the Dewaele brothers might have produced. Fiercely commanding, the track fizzed with the same kind of irreverence that endears so many to the Belgian duo. Soulwax's sped-up version, charged with perfectly pitched theatrics, was an enormous club hit and did justice to its source material. Given their clear chemistry, Soulwax sagely chose to release and remix Davidson’s latest track on their DEEWEE label. "Y.A.A.M." (Your Asses Are Mine) is a storming club cut in its own right. Davidson is back in dominatrix mode and still skewering capitalist club culture—as has been her M.O. on her past two albums. "Fake positivity is as cringe as it gets / You wanna suck me? / Screw your fucking brand," she deadpans. A crunching, filthy bassline runs through the track like an electric current while militant, layered percussion only heightens the drama. Soulwax's version is more maximalist, accenting the chorus with cartoonish stabs and chasing it with a frenetic break. And that's just in the first two minutes. Over the next four you'll hear cowbell, trancey keys, drum fills, breakbeats and wacky vocal effects. Few do bonkers as well as Soulwax, and this is almost certainly another DJ staple in coming months, but Davidson's track is just as potent and enjoyable. Choose your weapon; either is sure to land with force.
