Argy - What Time Is It?

  • DJ reactions are rarely helpful in determining a release's value these days. But if something makes GummiHz want to smother himself in baby oil, I tend to take notice. That's what this EP does apparently. And, to be honest, I can see why. The title track is an epic builder with searing synths that transforms itself from building to killing in a matter of moments with a well-placed bassline. Depending on when the promos went out, I imagine it would have found a place at just about every Secretsundaze gig this summer right before a beautiful vocal tune swooped in to pick up the pieces. That vocal tune might as well be the B-side, "Let Me Out." Ditto is the chosen one here for the job of tugging heartstrings, and he does it nicely with the help of billowing chords that waver sweetly against keening strings. It sounds like Chicago, and its melody mixes wonderfully with Dixon fave "The Wanderer." Argy has shown hints of such talent in the past, but this is a step above his previous work in this vein, proving that there's plenty of life in mimicry, and much to be said for reverence.
