Soul Electric Vol. 01

  • The latest offering on local and UK label, Offworld sounds is the new project by nu-skool breaks supremos, Danny McMillan and Will South. Together, as McMillan & South, these two have seen releases remixes on 10 Kilo, Exceptional and Streetbeat, and have worked with various breaks artists such as Pilgrem, Philadelphia Bluntz and Tab. Soul Electric is the name of their new project and they've shed their nu-skool stylings on this and gone for more of a downtempo, hip hop, trip hop and acid jazz kind of groove. Rather than just using samplers, McMillan and South take care of other instruments such as keyboards, guitars, and have invited guests such as George Sueref, Lorna Marshall, EQ and Marie South to provide some vocal input. Not completely shedding their nu-skool skin, you can hear some funky syncopated beats on the furious 4 U, Surrender using some 2-step styled beats and Cyba Space with Mags Brolly putting on the futuristic and monotonic female robot vocals, but mostly it's a downtempo (and slightly R&B) affair throughout most of the album. Similar in style to D.I.G. just a bit more electronic and much more prefereable to the previous Offworld release by Ooblo. For those that like their breaks but have always wanted something a bit more musical and groovy, then this is for you.
