Marco Carola in London

  • Kiri and Kostas Poulos, the Greek promoters behind Rhythmatic, arrived in the UK a decade ago, eventually settling into London life in 2007 following a move from Newcastle. Three years later, as they left their third anniversary party at 6 AM, it was clear that their Rhythmatic night is right at home among London's club scene. That seemed to be the case even before the night began, though, as any night that can manage to persuade Marco Carola to play elsewhere the same time Sven Vath and Cocoon are taking over fabric no less than a mile away is a signal of success. Carola could have easily been with his friends in Farringdon, but the Italian chose Rhythmatic on the strength of videos of footage from their previous parties. Photo credit: Daddy's Got Sweets Temperatures outside had plummeted to below freezing and, in the early stages of the night, the industrial heater hired in to warm up the large Hewett Street warehouse konked out. Undeterred, Stathis Lazarides set about warming the growing crowd with his mixture of deep house and techno. By the time Carola took over the reins at 1:30 AM, the crowd had long since stretched towards the back of the long, narrow space. The atmosphere intensified, and the Italian immediately set about delivering his underground techno sound. Bristling with an old school-tinged and druggy hypnotism, his selections kept the entire dance floor going off. Downstairs, Rhythmatic Residents Wesley Razzy and Rico Novo were joined by System Of Survival and Rossko for another Intimate, yet even colder party beneath the main room. Rhythmatic has been built on a foundation of bringing an international, house and techno sound to a diverse and party-loving crowd. With a 900 capacity crowd braving the big freeze, there was no better display as to exactly why they're among the best parties in London.
